The
Wild Ways is
a sequel to The
Enchantment Emporium, and I suspect you'll jump into
the series better if you begin at the beginning. Still, even
though it took quite a while to sort out all the players in
this series, once I had, I found it witty and entertaining.
Charlotte Gale loves her family and her music, and finds both
more than a little complicated at times, especially since
her family can change the world with the charms they cast.
Charlotte is a wild power and no one (including Charlotte)
knows quite what that means for her and the family. Charlotte
definitely isn't interested in walking away from her music
to do what the family wants. Add to that, the unexpected complication
of discovering another member of the family has been meddling
with the fey in ways that Charlotte simply cannot ingore.
Does that sound complicated? It is. The Gale family brings
a lot of players into the story and I'm still not completely
sure of the complexities of Huff's world building and how
the different magical entities work – but I loved Charlotte
and her staunch resistance to conformity. I loved the young
dragon prince and his difficulties fitting into a family that
definitely finds him unexpected. And I enjoyed Charlotte's
magic pouring through her music. For anyone looking for an
unusual approach to urban fantasy, I recommend starting with
The
Enchantment Emporium and then diving into The Wild
Ways for a magical reading ride.
