As a long-time fan of Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series, I was happy to see a new series and this opening book certainly doesn't disappoint. Nell Ingram has lived in fear of the cult she grew up in for years. She's free now, but tied by magic and loyalty to the land where she lives, land entirely too close to the cult. Now, strangers have come onto Nell's land, looking for her help to find girls kidnapped by a cult even more disturbing than the one Nell fears, and possibly just as close. I loved the characterization in this book. As with Jane Yellowrock, Nell is a person of faith and both shaped and scarred by her upbringing, but unsure of what to hold onto and what to discard as she plots her own destiny. This complexity makes her a compelling character, full of surprises and strong feelings. I also enjoyed the PsyLed team from the organization set up to police the paranormal community. The characters are well crafted and fascinating to read. All in all, an exciting new series that I'll be following with
pleasure.
