During
a paranormal investigation on their popular television show,
things went terribly, violently wrong for John Fogg and his
team, leaving Fogg's wife Theodora possessed. John Fogg knows
how to handle demons, but his wife's condition is no simple
possession. It's the beginning of something far worse, and
John begins a desperate search for some way to free her from
the hoard of demons before it's too late.
I love
virtually any book with good monsters, and this is definitely
one you shouldn't read alone in the dark. The story follows
several storylines: John's search for help for his wife; a
broken FBI agent's struggle to solve an inexplicable string
of child kidnappings; the transformation of one creepy dude
into a seriously scary thing; and the behind the scenes dealings
of a shadowy group who may be good and may not.
Despite
a lot going on, the storyline is cleanly written and not difficult
to follow. The pace is fast, but the author maintains the story's
integrity, building a compelling world and setting it in motion
in believable ways. John and Theodora are fantastic. He's
not perfect, but he's relentless in his love and commitment
to his wife. And she's amazing, strong without being an unbelievable
superhero. One of the things I truly loved about this book
is that things get really, really rough, but the book never
loses hope. This is the opening book for a new series, but
the book ends in a completely satisfying way, while still
leaving the reader eager to see what happens next with this
amazing group.
