It's
always exciting to get a fresh new visit with the Drood family
of spies, dealing with the Supernatural dangers of this world
and beyond. In this latest entry, Eddie Drood has a big problem.
He's been poisoned by the most secret assassin in the world
and even the amazing Drood doctors can't heal him. So Eddie
teams up again with Molly Metcalf, the wild witch, to find
his killer and perhaps a cure. And with his mortality so very
much on his mind, Eddie struggles even more than usual with
choices he needs to make, which brings him into conflict with
Molly's desperation to save him -- and conflict always makes
for an interesting dynamic. They poke around under a lot of
rocks and stir up plenty of trouble in this adventure, but
the author does the one thing I always have trouble forgiving
in a novel. He ends on a huge cliffhanger, leaving us hanging
until the next book to find out most of the answers we're
desperate to know. Even as much as I love the Secret Histories
series, the ending made the book hard to love. But if you
don't mind waiting for the end of the story, the part you
do get is Green's usual blend of lively action, snappy dialogue
and fantastic characters. |
