In
the second of the Echo Park Coven novels, the blood sisters
must battle the Flood, which threatens to destroy everyone
and everything that matters to them. A good bit of destruction
does happen in this Book 2, but the book ends with plenty
hanging in the balance: the coven has much to do. As with
the first book, the shifting viewpoints slowed the plot considerably,
but the premise is engaging enough to hold the reader through
the slower moments. The story has grown considerably darker
since the first novel with violence both on-stage and off,
and this one has none of the graphic, sexy bits that felt
a little out of place in the first. The shifting viewpoints
kept me from completely connecting with any of the characters,
but the intricate story that the whole series intends to tell
is becoming a little clearer and definitely compelling. Though
I'm still on the fence about liking this series, it is slowly
winning me over. If you don't mind your fantasy complex and
slow in unfolding, this series might be an excellent choice
-- it's definitely unique.
