The Chronicles of Alice
is a dark fantasy reimagining of the Alice in Wonderland story.
where the creatures Alice face have much sharper teeth and
much hungrier appetites. In Book Two, Alice has escaped the
city with her beloved, the mad Hatcher, and they go in search
of Hatcher's daughter. They
find devastation where they expected to see beauty. Something
is setting the world ablaze, and that burning creature is
only one of the dangers Alice and Hatcher will face as they
journey.
The beautiful prose the author crafts has a definite taste
of Lewis Carroll, and the story is every bit as fantastic,
if much darker than the original. Alice has hints of the innocent,
curious, logical child as in the original tale, but this Alice
has been through so much more; yet she retains (as she herself
notices) a bit of her own Alice-ness. Even without having
read the first book in the series, I was immediately swept
up in Alice and Hatcher's journey, and captivated to the very
last page. It's engaging, imaginative, and occasionally disturbing,
but then all the best fairytales are
