Claire
Connolly has magic. Unfortunately magic is illegal since the
Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell and
started a war. Humans won the war, but not everyone is happy
with the results. The paranormals grow restless in prison
on Devil's Island. And a group of humans feels that incarceration
isn't enough, that only destruction will return the world
to what it once was. With Clair straddling a precarious center
line, she just may have to finally make the jump to one side
or another.
I enjoyed
the character of Claire and the strength of her beliefs and
motivations. Since I was coming in on the second book in a
series, it took a little adjusting to get into, but that took
nothing away from a strong, fast-paced story that will keep
you reading late into the night. The romantic element wasn't
too distracting (as they can sometimes be), and the world-building
was interesting. I always like see a fresh take on what would
happen if magic came into our modern world. All in all, a
strong book and a sure winner for fans of urban fantasy or
paranormal.
