Isaac
Vainio was a Porter, a member of a group dedicated to keeping
magic hidden from the world, until the Porters kicked him
out. He was a libriomancer who used the power of reader belief
to pull objects from books, until Johannes Gutenberg bound
his magic. As the book opens, he's just a
Michigan librarian and even that job is looking a little rocky
since the world has discovered that magic is real and Isaac's
community is reeling after a deadly magical attack. With no
magic and few friends left, Isaac should rest and recover,
but that's just not how he rolls when people he cares about
are in trouble. This was the first of the novels I've read
in this series, but I found it easy to slip into the mythology
and be caught up in the action and the characters. The balance
of snark and edgy grit are exactly what I like in my urban
fantasy and I fell in love with the characters. Hines does
an especially good job with the mental and emotional struggles
that Isaac faces as he deals with the loss of his magic and
his guilt over what happened to his community and his friends.
I'll definitely catch up on the books I've missed and be watching
for the next book in the series. |
