Rivka
Stout must adjust to a new existence in Tamarania after being
rescued from an abusive life. As a machinist, she struggles
to fit in with proper society and isn't even sure she wants
that kind of life. Then she discovers the chimera gremlins,
man-made creatures with a passion for silver, and quickly
falls in love with the ugly creatures. Now all she has to
do is save them from death or something so much worse. I loved
that this novella revisted the chimera gremlins after the
two Clockwork novels, as so much was left undone for the charming
creatures. And the team of machinist Rivka and thrill-seeking,
Titiana was terrific as neither girl is perfect but together
they are formidable. I also liked how Cato skirted the "traditional"
love story aspect of YA Fantasy and kept our eyes on Rivka's
true goals. And the tool they use to save the gremlins, well,
as an avid reader, I simply couldn't help but love that choice.
The novella reads quickly but doesn't feel scant. It really
should be read as an extra bonus after the Clockwork novels,
as the story will feel much deeper if you know some background
on the world Cato has created in those two novels. For fans
of the series, this is truly a lovely little present.
