Tris
Vishal is a nobleman who has put his whole life behind him
to take up the task of banishing dangerous ghosts throughout
villages of the eastern continent. Mari Kaleja lives with
just one goal: vengeance on the one responsible for the death
of her family when she was a small child. Their obsessions
bring them together, but there's more than a little question
of which of them will survive the encounter. Although the
idea of dangerous ghosts whose touch brings death to the living
is nothing new in the genre, the authors brought a freshness
to the concept through these two interesting and compelling
characters. This is clearly the first in a new series, and
I'd enjoy learning more about these characters and this world.
Though there are plenty of unanswered questions, the story
still felt satisfying in the end, which is a delicate balance
to manage. The ghosts are wonderfully creepy, and Mari's secret
makes her a daunting character while still believable. The
authors also did a good job of weaving in backstory without
making the story feel overly stalled by those flashbacks,
though I hope they don't overuse the business of having the
characters become frozen/lost in their memories. It can quickly
become unbelievable. This first book needed a lot of flashbacks
to work, and probably pushed the envelope on using that technique,
but I would expect to see a lot less of it so it doesn't feel
so contrived. Beyond that, I enjoyed the book and flew through
the story, completely engrossed and eager to see how things
unfold. This is definitely a series I'll be watching for.
