In Heroine
Complex,
we met Aveda Jupiter and Evie Tanaka, two superheroes
battling demons from another dimension while trying to hold
on to their friendship. The focus of the first book was Evie
and her reluctance to be a superhero, but Heroine Worship
turns the focus on Aveda Jupiter. After realizing how self-focused
she'd been in the past, Aveda turns her attention to being
the best possible friend to Evie and that means being the
best possible maid of honor for her friend's coming wedding.
Aveda is sure she knows exactly what will make Evie happy,
even more than Evie knows herself. Unfortunately Aveda can't
focus on the wedding because there's some new demonic critter
that invaded and no one is quite sure what is going on, but
it doesn't look good. As with the first book in this series,
this one combines humor, romance, heart and serious butt-kicking
action, but somehow the plot hangs together better in this
book. Though some of the character revelation is far from
surprising, the characters have enough charm to keep us reading
even when the author makes a few too obvious choices. Aveda
is a fascinating hero with more than enough flaws to keep
her human, but a good heart under it all. I also enjoyed the
romance. As with many romantic entanglements, the characters
tend to be their own worst enemies, but this time the missteps
feel more natural. I enjoyed the first book; and I liked this
one even more. It was fun and engaging. If you need a light,
feel-good read, this one will definitely fill the bill.
