One
moment everything is normal, the next moment the world explodes
and is instantly put back together, only not as it was before.
Everywhere and everywhen has been mixed up with most of it missing,
so dinosaurs attack Civil War soldiers and a Victorian ship
gets rammed by a giant prehistoric shark. A group of survivors
band together to try to discover what has happened, including
modern Californian Amber, a young Celt from AD9, a Victorian
professor and “teddy boy” Simon from 1953.
This one is a lot of fun, hitting the ground running and racing
merrily onwards. As a lover of time travel tales, I seem to
have been looking for something like this for a long time, a
novel that does something different with the genre while still
retaining its lively, what-if tone. The authors have wisely
realised that a lot of Earth’s history involves prehistoric
creatures and settings so there are plenty of these, with odd
human survivors navigating a very strange land. To say too much
about what happens would spoil the story, which relies on the
reader being surprised, but I was impressed by the way some
possible clichés that would have become boring get deftly
sidestepped. This is the first book in a trilogy so don’t
expect a neat ending although some plot strands have been tied
up. I was left wanting more, always a good thing and caring
about the characters that are all very different but each interesting
in their own way. Books written by more than one author don’t
always work, but this husband and wife team complement each
other excellently for a smooth reading experience. Sure to be
one of my favorite books this year, one to dive into and be
swept along by. |
