The Genie in Your Genes
Epigenetic Medicine and the New Biology of Intention
by Dawson Church, Ph.D.
Dawson Church, author of The Genie in Your Genes, has presented a text well worth struggling through. Though
this book is not an easy read, it offers a wealth of information on coming to terms with a person's health and
ability to rely on his own consciousness to direct his well-being. Dawson explains his theory of epigenetic
medicine, the notion that there are healing techniques each person can employ to override the effects of the
genes that we think control our bodies. This overriding or correcting of errant genetic expression is not a matter of
"wishful thinking" or "good thoughts" but an active control of our consciousness. In fact, the pivotal chapter
between the scientific explanation of genetics and the "how to's" of putting consciousness into action is called
"Consciousness as Medicine."
"Being aware of how we react to stressful or chaotic situations," he says, "and employing our consciousness to
influence our genetic expression, we are able to avoid years of therapy, medicines, surgeries, and can actually
thrive during times of chaos." Had this idea been presented to the Western world twenty years ago, Dawson would have
been scoffed. Now we have seen many, many noted scholars (and Dawson presents them) who have taken this notion to
the forefront. Though a hard read, The Genie in Your Genes is well worth the effort. |
