Neris and India’s Idiot-Proof Diet
A Weight Loss Plan for Real Women

by India Knight and Neris Thomas

Two plus-size British women decide they are tired of looking like "eggs on legs" and embark on a low-carb diet that allows them to lose seventy pounds each during a year’s time. Neris and India’s Idiot-Proof Diet chronicles their progress during three phases in which their food choices and activity levels progress as the weight starts falling away. Their "Idiot-Proof Diet" involves giving up all forms of carbs (and other goodies) at the early stages, including potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, crackers, caffeine, starchy vegetables, all fruits, and any form of sugar. Eventually some of these items are allowed in small quantities.

More of a diet support book than an actual diet guide, Neris and India piece together ideas from other diets (e.g. Atkins Diet) offering food plans and daily recipes to help dieters get through the early days. Written in the style of friends talking to other friends, the authors mention unpleasant dieting details such as difficulty finding clothes (and underclothes) that fit, problems with constipation, advice on saggy skin, and unflattering "before" photographs. They also include personal goals, diet histories, diary entries, and hair and makeup tips.

Their intended audience is obviously women, but not all women will be able to relate to their advice. For example, women with only 10-25 pounds to lose, vegetarians, and vegans may find the diet restrictions drastic and unsatisfactory. Readers who will benefit the most from Neris and India’s Idiot-Proof Diet are women who are extremely overweight, have no dieting strategy currently in place, get little or no exercise, and absolutely love meat, eggs, and cheese. In their funny, friendly tone, both authors claim to have gone from size twenty-two down to size twelve during the course of a year. If readers are able to adhere to their strict low-carb plan, they may achieve comparable results.
