Soul Medicine
Awakening Your Inner Blueprint for Abundant Health and Energy
by Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. & Dawson Church, Ph.D.
Soul Medicine may be the most encouraging book I've ever read. As the authors point out, "Thirty years ago
[such a book] would have been a metaphysical treatise. Today, it represents the cutting edge of scientific
discovery... "
Just as the validation of quantum mechanics turned science head-over-heels, so have numerous scientific
discoveries overthrown much of allopathic medical beliefs. Researchers in the field of epigenics, for example, have
found evidence that "the genome is plastic and resembles constantly rewritten software code rather than being fixed
hardware that you inherit at birth." In other words, DNA isn't the all-powerful determining factor we've assumed it
to be.
Soul Medicine focuses on the human being as a system of energy in much the same way described by ancient
healing modalities that seek to free or balance energy, qi, chi, or other synonyms for 'soul.' The authors use the
term soul unapologetically, and with the understanding that it is "a personalized expression of the universal
field... as opposed to physical or mental form."
Authors Shealy and Church carry credentials solid enough to support their proposition. Shealy is a neurosurgeon
and well-known author of several books about holistic healing. He is also found of the American Holistic Medical
Association and currently serves as president of Holos University. Church, author of The Genie in Your Genes
(also reviewed on Myshelf.com), is founder of
Soul Medicine Institute and a recognized leader in the field of soul psychology. Together they've produced an
outstanding work that provides thoughtful evaluation of several alternative healing therapies, delivered in a
user-friendly and thoroughly convincing manner.
Beyond the explanations, however, there is relevant information to aid readers in taking control of their own
soul health, in keeping with the authors' stated goal of persuading us "that paying attention to your spiritual life
is the most important thing you can do for your health." In addition to background on the scientific research and
results that document the value of addressing soul as part of the healing process, Soul Medicine includes a
quiz to test your "soul connection," and chapters explaining how to find the best practitioner, the characteristics
of a healer, and concise breakdown and comparison of the many spiritual healing traditions and their origins.
Soul Medicine is a straight-talking guidebook for those who want more information about how alternative
healing modalities work. It is also an inspiring and hopeful resource for those who want to take responsibility for
their own physical, mental, and emotional well-being. |
