Crucial Conversations
Tools for Talking When Stakes are High

by Kerry Patterson

It is a well known fact that the ability to communicate clearly allows for results to be achieved.  Each conversation that we have can be considered crucial, since we can’t see into the future to predict whether the words we use today can be used against us in a negative way in the future.

In Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, Kerry Patterson defines crucial conversations as discussions between two or more people where (1) stakes are high (2) opinions vary, and (3) emotions run strong.

In everyday life, whether professional or personal, we engage in crucial conversations.  It is essential that we know how to compose ourselves and not allow our tempers to override our better judgment.  The use of dialogue is an effective means to allow two people to communicate in an open and non-abusive manner.

This book is broken out into twelve chapters. The one entitled "How to Stay in Dialogue When You’re Angry" is filled with ways to stand your ground without allowing anyone to push your "anger button."  I found this one chapter was well worth the price of the book.

No matter what situation you find yourself dealing with in your life, know that every word that you say could be crucial to your livelihood.  In today’s economy, when jobs are scarce, it is vital that we equip ourselves with the knowledge found in Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High to help prepare for uncertain futures.  Very highly recommended.
