The Fearless Fish Out of Water
How to Succeed When You’re the Only One Like You

by Robin Fisher Roffer

If you’ve ever felt like a fish out of water—different, unpopular, out of sync, ahead of your time—then this book, The Fearless Fish Out of Water (How to Succeed When You’re the Only One Like You) by Robin Fisher Roffer is for you.

"Being a fish out of water is the best thing that could have ever happened to you," according to Ms. Roffer. But learning to take advantage of that lucky accident, learning to turn qualities you might be perceiving as liabilities into the strengths they can become, will require that you stop compromising yourself, stop living according to other people’s ideas of who you should be and face life as a 'fearless fish', someone who (again quoting Ms. Roffer) has learned to, "come to terms with the fact that there were things about myself that I could change and others I was simply going to have to accept."

With helpful exercises at the conclusion of each chapter and touching personal stories from a whole school of fearless fish scattered throughout the text, this is a book aimed at teaching each of us to rejoice in our uniqueness and thrive in our own authentic way.  Ms. Roffer’s tone is warm, genuine and inspirational; kind of like a cross between a big sister and a life-style coach. I especially liked what she had to say about mentoring for women. If I came away a little less than convinced by the arguments in the chapter titled, "Swim in Their Ocean Your Way," I’m sure it reflects more about my own feelings vis corporate life than it does about the material, or the way it was presented.

All in all, I found this to be a very worthwhile book for anyone looking to excel, either personally or professionally, and to do it on his or her own terms.
