Another
book in his JumpStart series, best-selling author, coach,
and speaker John C. Maxwell offers a 90-day improvement plan
for personal growth. Read by Chris Sorensen, the book offers
a daily quotation on the subject followed by a short explanation,
then a homework assignment to help readers develop personally.
Known for his professional leadership publications, Maxwell’s
ideas on personal growth, not directly related to business,
are equally impressive. The assignments included in each day’s
reading provide ideas for contemplation and suggestions for
action.
This audiobook is a condensed version of his bestselling book,
The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, based on the author’s
study of personal development for more than 50 years. The
daily readings and assignments are brief, thereby encouraging
readers to tackle one item per day. Another option, of course,
is to read multiple days at a time and take notes for future
use.
The book provides more than 90 ideas to think about, such
as creating a list of growth goals, analyzing your responses
to negative experiences, and surrounding yourself with people
who are ahead of you in whatever area you want to improve.
He tells readers why this is essential for growth and suggests
how to achieve it. Other important concepts include differentiating
between goal consciousness and growth consciousness. In the
former, you can work toward a goal and then reach it, which
in turn leads to another goal. In the latter, you commit to
a lifetime of self-improvement, consciously growing through
each daily experience.
One of the key ideas of the book is the difference between
accidental growth and intentional growth. Accidental growth
comes from life thrusting unpleasant circumstances our way,
such as illness or divorce, with which we eventually come
to terms. Intentional growth is actively looking for the lesson
in every failure and accomplishment we encounter each day.
He says intentional growth means purposely seeking ways to
grow by constantly recognizing our responses to situations,
rather than waiting for opportunities to force themselves
upon us.
Even those readers who have been on their own long-term paths
to personal growth can benefit from these new ideas, old insights,
and helpful reminders. The book describes how to actively,
consciously, purposefully and intentionally live a more fulfilling
life through becoming increasingly self-aware of the life
we’re creating for ourselves.
