Deepak Chopra and Rudolph Tanzi have together written a book on the science of genetics and epigenetics, explaining how our lives are affected by our genes, but with the use of epigenetics, we can turn on or off genes and thereby change the course of our physical lives.

This is a complex subject that remains at the forefront of scientific study, and while the public may be somewhat aware of the subject, until now I had not seen a book that brought the discussion into focus so that non-scientists can begin to understand. The studies in the book are readable, that is not made up of difficult or unfamiliar terms, and I found myself fascinated enough that I kept turning page after page, eager to absorb more.

The book is in three parts. The first, “The Science of Transformation,” delves deeply into current research. Part two “Lifestyle Choices for Radical Well-Being” offers lessons and choices on diet, stress, exercise, meditation, sleep and emotions, along with check-lists to help you keep track of your progress. I was particularly impressed with the suggestions that you do the easy things first, make them permanent changes and then move on to the harder changes, hopefully making one change a week for a year. Imagine fifty-two lifestyle changes done a little at a time, bite-sized changes, so to speak, therefore changes that will stick.

Part three, “Guiding Your Own Evolution,” deals with the wisdom of the body, and of living mindfully. The reader learns about the consciousness of cells, and how your body really works to promote health and healing. Our bodies are more adaptable than we have realized. It is wonderful that we as human beings are finally learning to live with an openness to the miracles of mind and body working in conjunction.

Although I have long considered myself to be fairly well read on the topic of how we create our own reality, Super Genes shines a whole new light on the subject, and I learned a great many new things from the book. While it is a scientific book, it is also a self-help book and one that I am certain to be rereading myself and to be recommending to family, friends and anyone interested in cutting-edge ways to improve their health and their lifestyles.
