Lord Loss
The Demonata Series, No. 1
by Darren Shan
Lord Loss is not a book for the faint of heart; it's very dark and very violent.
Grubbs Grady is a normal teen, a little self-involved and sometimes casually cruel, but
not so different from any other teen - until the murder of his family throws him into
insanity. He emerges only to learn his family holds dark secrets and he'll have to choose
how far to commit to darkness in order to save the new family he's found.
Lord Loss is the first book in a series, but this one really is complete in
itself. It doesn't leave scores of unanswered questions to be wrapped up in later books.
The book is also fast paced, though the blinding speed of the plot does make for somewhat
shaky characterization. The main character begins by being extremely unlikable and it
may be hard for readers to overcome that first impression. Also, some of the most violent
incidents in the book happen in the early chapters and may simply be too much gore for
some readers. This is not a book for young teens (despite the 9 - 12 age range on Amazon),
but for older teens who love slasher flicks or movies like Constantine, this book
will get them reading and we're always trying to do that. |
