Under
the Same Sky
By
Cynthia DeFelice
Joe
Pedersen is a perfectly normal teenager. He wants to have fun. He
wants the same cool stuff as his friends. He thinks his folks are
made of money. Like a lot of kids, the time has come for him to
learn a little reality. Joe gets to earn the money for the motorbike
he wants by working on his Dad's farm along side the migrant workers.
He also gets much more - real friendship, his first taste of romance,
and a chance to be a hero. And none of these things are anything
like he expected them to be. The book manages to combine political
and social commentary with strong believable characters and a plot
that holds you captive from beginning to end. It's not only an enjoyable
read, but also a book well worth talking about. Migrant workers
are often overlooked when we talk about tolerance and fair play.
I'm glad to see a novel that shines a light on that and does it
with style and more than a little humor. Good job!
