Alice on Deadlines
Volume I
by Shiro Ihara
Lapan is a shinigami - a collector of souls, complete with scythe. He lives in another realm with others of his
kind, but Lapan’s passion is rather more fleshly as he loves girls! Caught reading a girlie magazine when he
should have been working, his section chief sends him down to Earth to collect a wandering soul. He is to take
over the body of a skeleton once he is there so he won’t be tempted to let people (i.e. girls) see him. But
somehow it all goes wrong, and he ends up in the body of nubile high school girl named Alice, and she ends up in
the skeleton! Worse still, he has lost his passage papers so cannot return home. But maybe being loose in a girls'
school won’t be all bad...
This one is a lot of fun! To Western readers it is also rather original, giving us a glimpse of Japanese
folklore and a bit of the sauciness that some manga has in abundance. Cross dressing, people of one sex in
bodies of the opposite sex, mistaken identity and lots of humor make this a very amusing and tangled tale
indeed. There is nothing to shock however, and it is all done with the right light touch, putting me in mind a
little of a few episodes of TV shows like Buffy and Xena. The illustrations make the story come
to vibrant life, with some rather unusual school uniforms, some neat action shots and Lapan’s imagination being
shown in a way mere words could not easily convey. This is my favorite of the first batch from Yen Press, and I
look forward to seeing what on earth (or in the spirit realm) happens next. |
