Alice on Deadlines - Volume II
by Shiro Ihara
Shinigami Lapan is still in the wrong body - the nubile body of busty young student Alice, while Alice inhabits the
skeletal form that he should be in. Ume is in love with Lapan and in the guise of a pretty maid, and why is a cat
stealing underwear? In this second episode of the saucy serial the mismatched team come up against a shibito king
called the Mad Hatter. He wants to marry Alice, preferring girls without any excess flesh... in fact, no flesh at
all! We learn more about Lapan’s misspent youth and why Ume has the hots for him...
Zombies, skeletons, magical cats, knickers... these things could surely only go together in the world of manga,
where things are frequently the opposite of what they are in western novels. I love the racy humor and mix of the
cute and the grotesque in this series, a fun twist on Japanese folklore and with plenty of the sort of muddles that
make for an amusing tale. The right light touch is needed here to make it all "in the best possible taste" and this
is what makes the series so enjoyable, that mix of fantasy, comedy and some wonderful illustrations. Put the story
into words alone and you would lose much of the humor; the illustrations are wonderfully attractive, combining
female pulchritude (and Lapan’s over active imagination) with swirling action and some gruesome monsters. This is
still my favorite of the first batch from Yen Press, mainly because it shows what can be done when words and pictures
meet, as well as a melding of East and West, fantasy and comedy. |
