Zombies, skeletons, magical cats, knickers... these things could surely only go together in the world of manga, where things are frequently the opposite of what they are in western novels. I love the racy humor and mix of the cute and the grotesque in this series, a fun twist on Japanese folklore and with plenty of the sort of muddles that make for an amusing tale. The right light touch is needed here to make it all "in the best possible taste" and this is what makes the series so enjoyable, that mix of fantasy, comedy and some wonderful illustrations. Put the story into words alone and you would lose much of the humor; the illustrations are wonderfully attractive, combining female pulchritude (and Lapan’s over active imagination) with swirling action and some gruesome monsters. This is still my favorite of the first batch from Yen Press, mainly because it shows what can be done when words and pictures meet, as well as a melding of East and West, fantasy and comedy.
