California Dreaming:
An A-List Novel
by Zoey Dean
As I am not a fan of novels about rich girls behaving badly, I must admit to not expecting to like California
Dreaming. I was pleasantly surprised. California Dreaming is a coming-of-age novel in the truest sense.
Anna, Sam, and Cammie have it all - money, looks, and a dream life ahead of them - and they're increasingly wondering
if they want it. Anna has planned to go to Yale since she was barely out of diapers, but when the time comes to go -
she hops impulsively on a plane to Bali with a boy she's only recently re-met (they knew each other as children). When
the plane almost crashes, Anna decides to live life as if she were dying - now all she has to do is discover what
that means for her. Sam is in love with Eduardo, and they plan to marry. But her first love is movies, and she's
dreamed of directing for as long as she's dreamed of Yale. When it looks like she can't have both, which dream is
the right one for her? Cammie is co-owner of the hot new club, and it looks like she's finally got Ben back
from Anna. She loves the limelight, but will the glitter be enough? The characters are far from perfect and their
lives are far above anything the average reader will ever experience, but the core conflicts - family dramas, duty
vs. dreams, and what does friendship mean? - will ring true for anyone. Even self-centered Cammie will have the
reader caring by the end of the book - and that's good writing! |
