The Devouring
by Simon Holt
Reggie and her best friend Aaron love scary movies and scary books. So when Reggie finds an old journal filled with
ravings about Vours, evil creatures that take over humans, it sounds like the best kind of horror story. She and
Aaron decide to test this "urban legend" but nothing seems to happen — until Reggie's little brother begins
acting strangely. Finding no help in her distracted, angry father, Reggie and Aaron have to summon the courage to
fight creatures that feed on fear. This is a horror story in the best tradition — creepy, atmospheric, and
sometimes a little gross — but not the blood bath of some of the teen horror books I've read. It leaps right
into the creepy scares with Reggie reading from the spooky journal and really never lets up. Simon Holt does an
excellent job with the characterization, making readers care about these characters and then putting them in the
worst kinds of danger. According to the editor, this book is "It's Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets The
Exorcist meets Scream." — I definitely agree. I also noticed that the ending definitely leaves
room for another book, so if you loved this one — let's cross our fingers for a sequel. |
