The Dragon’s Lair
The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme # 3

by Elizabeth Haydon

Young Ven Polypheme is once again off on an adventure as the Royal Reporter for the King of Serendair. No matter that Ven was fired from that position only one day after having been granted it - the firing was only a ruse to keep those who would harm the King, or his kingdom, from knowing that Ven was a trusted emissary. This time, however, Ven is not merely exploring and recording, he also is fleeing for his life.

During a previous adventure, Ven and his friends had managed to thwart a very powerful and dark queen - The Thief Queen - and now she is bent on revenge. The only way to survive the attentions of her raven scouts is to leave the city and travel deep into the inner kingdoms of Serendair.

The troupe is concerned, first and foremost, with keeping themselves alive, but they are also to attend to the King’s business if they are able. Of course, the business of the King also may cost them their lives. They are to locate a dragon that has reportedly been wreaking havoc, discover the reason for the dragon’s ire and find a solution, and prevent a war between the Lirin and the Nain. And though the King of Serendair has had Ven memorize just what to say to keep the Lirin and Nain from killing the little group on the spot, it seems as though the King’s words may result in the end of his rule altogether.

While the group of friends has learned to trust one another and work together, an unexpected and unwelcome addition to their company is threatening that hard-won trust and cooperation. How can the friends trust Ven when he insists that they be honest with one another and yet seemingly keeps more and more secrets himself - perhaps life-threatening secrets?

Fans of The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme will be thrilled with this fast-paced third book in the series. Young adult readers, and children as young as nine, will enjoy The Dragon’s Lair. As in The Thief Queen’s Daughter, this book picks up right where the previous one left off. However, rather than tying the adventure into a satisfying ending like the previous two, this one ends in a cliffhanger that will have the reader waiting on pins and needles for the next in the series.
