Something Wicked
A Horatio Wilkes mystery
by Alan M Gratz
High school senior Horatio Wilkes is attending the Scottish Highland Festival in Pigeon Fork, Tennessee, with his
friends, Joe MacKensie, Wallace Banks and Beth Weigel. The Festival is the pride of Duncan MacRae, its founder,
and owner of the mountain on which it is held. This mountain is the only land unspoiled by developers and therefore
greatly desired by the local real estate men. Duncan is Joe's grandfather and Joe believes (with his greedy girl
friend, Beth) that he is entitled to the land.
Duncan is found murdered in his tent. The name of his son, Malcolm, is written with his splattered blood on the
sides of the tent. Police believe Duncan wrote the name of his murderer in his dying moments. Malcolm protests his
innocence, and Horatio has his doubts about Malcolm's guilt .When Beth and Joe begin acting suspiciously, he seeks
answers.
Something Wicked is the story of friendship, trust and betrayal. The author presents a disturbing picture
of lands plundered and destroyed by developers of strip malls and tourists resorts. This is a disturbing picture of
how a man's greed and inflated opinion of his importance can lead to disaster.
The atmosphere of the Highland Festival is a festive one. |
