Spiral:
The Bonds of Reasoning - Book II
by Kyo Shirodaira and Eita Mizuno
Ayumu Narumi is still on the track of his missing older brother Kiyotaka, and still in the shadow of this
extraordinary genius. His disappearance is linked to the deepening mystery of the "Blade Children." Helping him are
his detective sister-in-law Madoka and a cute girl from his class called Hiyono, and in this second installment he
certainly has plenty to need help with! Two more Blade Children have surfaced and he needs all his wits about him
to help prevent a bomb going off and being stung by hornets, among other challenges.
Anybody who reads these reviews regularly will know how I love detective stories, and also anything new and
original. Put these together and you have this highly entertaining manga, which combines the puzzle solving of a
mystery with a slightly SF twist. His elder brother hopelessly overshadows Ayumu despite his own impressive gifts,
and thus this series will resonate for anybody who has been in this situation. Is it up to Ayumu to rescue his
brother... or rescue other people from him... or rescue him from himself? This is one of the many mysteries that
seem to get the characters deeper into the heart of the conundrum instead of solving it, hence the name spiral.
Ayumu wrestles with some adult feelings, the two Blade Children make for interesting and bizarre villains and a
sense of the plot thickening pervades the book. The protagonists in this book are all young, being just 10th
graders, but that shouldn’t put anybody off what is a teasing, highly complex and very enjoyable story. |
