The Hollow
First in a trilogy
by Jessica Verday
Abbey’s best friend Kristen is missing and presumed dead. People whisper that she has gone
the same way as her brother did, from drug abuse, but Abbey knows that Kristen didn’t do drugs.
At the funeral, she encounters the mysterious Caspian, a boy who keeps disappearing but who makes
her feel special despite his obvious secrets. She is falling in love, but also feeling that she
has a lot to find out, not just about her new friend, but about Kristen too.
If you have read and enjoyed Twilight (also
reviewed on this site) and yearn
for more paranormal romance, you might be pleased that this is not just another vampire tale, but
something else. Ms Verday has used her imagination more than that and come up with something that
fits the bill for this type of fiction without being another clone. I particularly liked the
touch that Sleepy Hollow was a real place. This author excels at descriptions, sinking the reader
into the story with them. It is not a quick read, but something to be savored more slowly. It is
told in the first person by Abbey herself and, from the first page, sucks the reader into her world.
At times, it suffers from being a bit slow, but overall this book is several notches above most
YA supernatural romances, both for its imagination and the excellent writing. This is the first
in a trilogy, so it will be interesting to see what happens next. |
