Maya is from a very untraditional family and this makes life for her as a teenager harder
than most have to go through. Her mother is in jail and her father is a huge rock star. Maya
is forced to grow up too fast and decide for herself where she wants to live and how. She
chooses her uncle’s home. It will provide what she is missing, a place to belong.
Maya is dedicated to helping preserve and save the earth. We take for granted that what
we have will always be here, that we can continue to destroy the earth’s resources and that it
will not adversely affect us. But it will, and she tells her story in a compelling way each
week in the local newspaper. How many teenagers do you know have their own newspaper columns?
Another part of being a teenager is dealing with teenage relationships. Her boyfriend wants
more than she is comfortable providing. How does she tell him this without losing what she
thinks is true love? The other issue she is trying to figure out is her faith in God and if
she is a Christian. This story covers all of the issues that I have already pointed out, and
then some.
I found this book to be very compelling and direct. It touched on all aspects of a teenager's
life and provides a direction for finding one's faith and family values. I enjoyed this book as
I have in the past reading the words of Melody Carlson.
