Max
Maximum Ride Book #5

by James Patterson

Max is an 8 year old female birdkid.  A birdkid is 98% human and 2% bird and Max is the leader of the flock, whose mission is to save the Planet Earth from disasters such as global warming and pollution.  The time is the not too distant future.

Returning from Antarctica to Los Angeles, for an air show for the U S Navy, the flock learns that millions of fish are dying off Hawaii's coast.  They must search for the cause.   Meanwhile, Max's mother is kidnapped by an evil man, Mr Chu, and the flock is targeted for killing.  In the midst of all these problems confronting Max and the flock, she finally admits that she and Fang have feelings for each other. The final ending is a cliff-hanger.  So wait for the next book!

Max is an exciting, entertaining book with a fast-paced plot.  It has a bit of romance, lots of humor and adventure, and even sarcasm.  There are almost too many messages about global warming and environmental disasters, but despite that this is a fun read, meant for young adults, but which can be enjoyed by all ages.
