Meeting Lizzy
by SarahBeth Carter
When seventeen year old Cy McIntyre hears strange noises coming from the upstairs apartment, he goes up to check
them out. Cy is convinced that seventeen year old Eliza Wood is being beaten and abused by her boyfriend, Ryan.
Lizzy swears Cy to secrecy. Cy is Midline High's designated "freak" while Lizzy is Midline High's "princess".
Cy works very hard at maintaining his "freak" status just to get his father's attention.
Cy had lost his mother when he was very young and now lives with his emotionally unavailable father who is
absent most of the time. The closest thing he's ever had to a parent is his dad's personal assistant. Lizzy also
lives with her very unobservant father, her mother having walked out on them years earlier. Cy and Lizzy begin to
develop a relationship and have a great deal to offer each other—having very similar life situations.
In Meeting Lizzy the story alternates between Cy speaking and Lizzy speaking. The problem I had with
this book was that it was difficult to tell at the start of each chapter which character was speaking, since both
characters' "voices" sounded exactly the same. I felt the subject matter this book dealt with was handled well
and would be an asset for any teen to read who even remotely believes they are in an abusive relationship. The
plot flows smoothly and the book is an enjoyable one to read. |
