The Set-Up
The Medusa Project - Book I
by Sophie McKenzie
Nico Fox is an ordinary fourteen-year-old boy at a school where his stepfather is the headmaster.
One day in assembly he sees the girl he fancies gazing adoringly at another boy, and suddenly there
appears to be a tornado on the loose...indoors. He might not know what is going on but his stepfather
Fergus certainly does. Nico and three other children were used as guinea pigs for an experiment when
they were still unborn, and now it looks as though the psychic powers they were intended to have might
be real after all. With Nico it is telekinesis, and he hopes it is going to bring him fame, fortune
and the girl he loves. He does not realize that it will also bring trouble...
This is the first gripping installment in a highly readable new series aimed at readers of eleven
and over. I’m a long way over that age and I certainly enjoyed it, finding it a pacy, action-packed
tale which is sure to appeal to both genders and a variety of ages. Narrated by Nico, it contains
more than just superhero-style incidents as he has to cope with first love, school bullies,
friendships, being loose in the world of adults, discovering who to trust and the rocky relationship
with his stepfather. Chapters are short and easy to read, designed to appeal to the target age group
and sure to pull in a few reluctant readers with the sort of story that would make a great TV series.
I’ll be looking out for the others. |
