The Dead-Tossed Waves continues the story begun in
The Forest of
Hands and Teeth. A virus has turned the peaceful dead of the world into zombies who
shamble and moan outside tall fences and thick walls designed to protect the surviving humans.
Mary, the heroine from the first novel, has settled down in the village by the shore. She clears
the beaches each morning of the zombies who wash ashore. If she doesn't they'll stand and hunt
for people to infect.
Mary's daughter, Gabry, has only known the village and its safety. She's content to stay that
way forever, but when her closest friends coax her over the wall for a night of fun at an
abandoned amusement park, everything turns horrible at once. Friends die and live again.
Friends are captured and sentenced to a fate that is close to suicide. And one person—Gabry's
dearest friend—is changed forever. Now if Gabry is to be true to her friends and herself,
she must call on courage that she never knew she had and launch herself into the most terrifying
places she's ever imagined.
Though not fast-paced, this novel is both compelling and disturbing. It asks hard questions
and makes the reader face the truth that sometimes there simply are no right answers. The ending
leaves many loose ends and is sure to keep readers waiting anxiously for the next visit to this
zombie-filled world.
