Charlotte Usher is a ghost but she's definitely not resting in peace. In this most recent
Ghostgirl installment, she has another task to fulfill in her afterlife and this one involves
going back to her old high school as a ghostly helper for her ex-crush. If that's not awkward
enough, her ex is now Charlotte's best friend's boyfriend. Oh, and this best friend is the only
human who can still see Charlotte in her ghostly form.
To complicate things even more, Charlotte's new boyfriend—a deceased musician—is
best friend Scarlet's ghostly helper. Scarlet sees him too, and likes him. This book is
definitely written for fans of the series. As a newcomer, I felt thrown in the middle of a sea of
activity that I knew nothing about and it took a while to sort out the characters and their
relationships. The author juggles a lot of different characters and storylines, which can be more
than a little confusing for the uninitiated, but her wit and daring keep the reader engaged even
during the confusion. That confusion can be a bit off-putting, but once I got my afterlife sea
legs, I found the story amazingly funny.
My favorite of many subplots to the story was when Scarlet's uber-popular sister goes on a
secret mission to help the homeless become more stylish by giving them designer clothes. If
you're looking for creepy ghosts, this is not the place, but if you like your teen relationship
angst with a twist of brilliant bizarro, this is an excellent read. By the end, I was a fan.
