Sisters Red
by Jackson Pearce
“Sisters
Red” is the story of the two March sisters, Scarlett and Rosie.
The story begins eight years ago when Scarlett was eleven and Rosie
was eight. They were living with their grandmother, whom they called
Oma March. One day, a salesman appeared at the door of the cottage
they shared with their grandmother. They soon learned this was no
salesman, but a Fenris, or werewolf. He was the Alpha leader of
the packs who roamed around the small town in Georgia where they
lived. The wolves hunted and ate adolescent girls. He attacked them,
killing their grandmother and seriously injuring Scarlett. He’d
have dined on both girls if Scarlett hadn’t fought hard to
save her sister, and a neighbor hadn’t come to help.
The
neighbor, Pa Reynolds, took the girls to raise and taught them about
Fenris. There were no females, for werewolves live forever, unless
they are killed. With hunters that thrived on killing Fenris, that
was happening far more often. To maintain their population, they
had to convert a young man into a soulless monster. But how these
“Potentials” are chosen is anyone’s guess.
“Sisters Red” is a compelling tale of two sisters who
hunt these beasts along with their friend, Silas Reynolds. For Scarlett,
the hunt is an all-consuming passion. But for Silas and Rosie, their
passion is for each other and hunting is a responsibility to the
young women the wolves would kill, or worse. Scarlett had lost an
eye and had scars everywhere from that first attack.
There aren’t many horror stories that are as compelling as
“Sisters Red.” Since it is only the second novel from
Jackson Pearce, I expect him to only get better. Give this one a
listen. And keep an eye on this writer.
