The novel The Boy from Ilysies by Pearl
North, for students in grade 8 and up, focuses on the value of a
book, but more so on the struggle of two groups of people once torn
apart by their cultural beliefs and now trying to unite in an effort
to create a peaceful community.
Po, (the boy form Ilysies) a central character in the novel, has
a hard time fitting in with the new community because his background
and beliefs are almost totally opposite to what he is accustomed
to. Po will be a likable character to young readers as they will
identify with the frustrations that go along with fitting in. At
the same time the readers will be surprised at the Libyrarians'
view on sex and reproduction.
Aside from this study of fitting in, the book has enough adventure
to satisfy the most avid reader. The episode in which the Libyrarians’
search for the Endymion Rose serves as the climax of the novel and
lets the reader know of Pos final fate. The question is: will readers
be satisfied with the author's placement of Po. An excellent read
for students in this age range.
