James Patterson and Ned
Rust team up for the second book in the Witch and Wizard series,
“Witch and Wizard: The Gift.” Teenagers Whit and Wisty
Allgoode are still hiding from the one who is The One. He wants
Wisty’s gift. He has taken their parents captive and is holding
them prisoner, demanding that Wisty give up her gift in exchange
for her parents’ lives.
Wisty, however, is determined to rescue them and destroy The One.
She and Whit are hiding with a group of children and teens while
they learn to use their magic and control it. For instance, Wisty
can burst into flame without ever being burned. However, she can’t
always control when, where and how hot the fire will be. Whit can
change his form and move things, but not always on demand. Sometimes
things don’t happen at all; sometimes the thing that happens
isn’t at all what he had in mind. Only lately was he figuring
out the right spells to make his magic work right. Meanwhile, The
One was executing every witch and wizard he found in hopes to capture
Whitford and Wisteria Allgoode in the process.
As always, James Patterson has come up with a can’t-put-it-down
thriller. This time, however, he has combined the mystery with the
fantasy, creating a chilling genre of his own. This one was particularly
well-written. The tension is visible in the first line of the book
and never lets up. The two protagonists are typical teenagers. They’re
positive their parents don’t know what is best for their children
or understand the situation. As usual, the parents are right. So,
listen to “Witch and Wizard: The Gift,” and its predecessor,
“Witch and Wizard.” You will be thrilled.
