Fourteen-year-old Morveren and her twin sister Jenna live on an island off the coast of Cornwall. After a storm she finds an injured boy lying in a pool of water in a cave; but when she goes to help him she discovers that he has a tail instead of legs. Malin is a Mer boy, and wants to get back to his own people. Her sister has other ideas, but Morveren is about to have the adventure of her life…

This is the fifth adventure in the popular YA series of Ingo stories and introduces a new cast of characters. Teenage (and older tweenage) girls will enjoy the story of the human girl looking after the beautiful merboy; an interesting addition to the current trend for paranormal romances. As I live in the West Country I particularly enjoyed Morveren's first person descriptions of Cornwall, which are spot-on and bring the place to life. Apart from the lyrical fantasy this is very much a story about relationships: the two sisters' fluctuating feelings about one another, the sisters and their much younger brother, Morveren and Malin, Jenna and Bran and the humans with the Mer. It is also a story with music threaded through it that is sure to appeal to those with an interest in music; in short, something for quite a range of people. Enjoyably different.
