Taking
off where The Falconer, the first book in this thrilling
trilogy, ended, The Vanishing Throne starts with our 18-year-old
aristocratic protagonist, Aileana, trapped in the Fae world.
Lonrach, a powerful fae, tortures her to steal her memories,
for he claims she is the key that will give him the power
to become the one and only king. Aileana may be the key, but
if she is, she is unaware of it. She dreams only of escaping
and finding Kiaran, the fae who was her trainer and reluctant
mentor, the fae with a turbulent past she may have fallen
in love with.
I enjoyed Aileana’s story, but, even more, I enjoyed
learning about the past of this parallel world Elizabeth May
has created and that is revealed to Aileana and to the reader
as the story progresses. The reasons behind the characters’
actions take a new meaning then, and lead us in unexpected
directions.
Eventually, Aileana comes to understand that the future of
humans and fae is in her hands, but only if she is willing
to embrace all the power that comes with being the last falconer.
During the course of this novel, Aileana evolves from being
a human girl mourning the death of her mother at the hands
of a fae, focused only on revenge, into a young woman who
is able to put her personal feelings aside and is willing
to make sacrifices for others.
The dramatic ending to this second installment opens a new
chapter in this intricate story, and sets the stage for an
epic denouement I can’t wait to read.
