Surfer Girl
A Guide to the Surfing Life
by Sanoe Lake and Steven Jarrett
Speaking as a middle aged woman in New England, a book about surfing is about as nonrelevant
as you can get, but I'll be darned if Surfer Girl: A Guide to the Surfing Life didn't
make me want to go catch a wave (in the face probably). The book is full-color informative
fun from start to finish. The lively insider style clues the girl reader in on everything
from the correct use of the word "dude," to protecting your skin from the sun, to how to
safely fall off a board. This little book is literally packed with info. It also has very
cool photos and a truly amusing running shark joke cartoon. I found the parts on the history
of surfing and women to be truly fascinating, as well as the part technology has played in
making surfing more accessible for women. I would consider this book indispensable for any
young woman interested in surfing - it's information rich for the newcomer and just plain
funny for those with a bit of experience (plus, they may learn something in spite of themselves)
- and there's enough focus on safety to make any mom feel better. So, if your honey doesn't
want to be a kook, get her this book - she'll be stoked. |
