Countdown to Summer
A Poem for Every Day of the School Year

by J. Patrick Lewis
Illustrated by Ethan Long

This delightful book starts with number 180, and counts the pages backward to number 1.  Reading one a day gets you through the school year with riddles, poems and laughs...if you can limit yourself to one per day.

These lively poems cover every subject imaginable and are illustrated by Ethan Long's amusing black and white drawings.  The selections cover everything from "The Ding-a-ling Dragon" to "Bad Pretzels" and "Rabbit Math." There are limericks and haiku and one poem shaped like a banana.

Whether you read it straight through, one poem per day as Lewis intended, or browse and jump from one to another, the book is great entertainment, and you will want to read many of the poems over and over again.  It is great for middle grader's independent reading, but would also be fun to read aloud to younger kids.
