Blood Redemption

by A H Holt

Wes Lane and Red Thornton are cousins, and bitter adversaries. Wes is heir to the large White Willow Ranch and seems without a conscience, while Red is a poor rancher’s son who tries to keep his cousin out of trouble.  One day this rivalry goes too far, and an argument ends with a man lying dead, shot by Red’s gun.  So Red goes to jail for three years, even though the shooting is not his fault.  When he comes out, it is to clear his name and discover what is going on at White Willow Ranch.

This is a good, action-packed, old-fashioned western in the best sense of the term; you could imagine a film being made of it back in the days when they made westerns.  In a few broad strokes, this author sketches in the wild Arizona setting, the personalities of her characters and sets the scene for the story.  There isn’t a spare word in here, (perhaps many wordier authors ought to read this novel to see how it can be done) and it all comes to vibrant life.  This is not a tale of blood and guts, and not much is made of Red’s time spent in jail, but anybody familiar with westerns can supply any extra details with their imagination. This is just not that sort of story.  There is a strong sense of the value of justice here, and of right triumphing over the odds in the shape of Red, a character who comes through mainly because he knows when to be brave and when to be sensible.  If you love westerns, you will enjoy this treat.
