Born in the vibrant neighborhood of Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Fonseca represents the next generation of tennis legends from Brazil. He has a natural athleticism and a dedication that sets him apart from his peers.
Early Life
Tennis was built into Fonseca’s DNA from the start. Growing up in a home where his father Christiano, CEO of Brazil’s first independent hedge fund, practiced jiu-jitsu and yoga.
Young João showed extraordinary coordination even at age two. The family’s exercise room became his first tennis court, where his father and son played mini-tennis matches that often ended in tears when his father would dramatically turn a 9-3 lead to a close finish.

Living next to the Rio de Janeiro Country Club, Fonseca began his formal tennis journey at age four. That said, his parents made sure he remained well-rounded by encouraging participation in soccer, judo, and jiu-jitsu.
Showing Promise From a Young Age
From the beginning, Fonseca’s natural talent was unmistakable. His father’s yoga teacher was among the first to notice his exceptional reflexes and coordination.
Between the ages of eight and eleven, one hour of daily practice wasn’t enough to satisfy young João’s appetite for tennis. Fun fact: he’d spend extra time hitting against walls or begging family members for more play time!

Needless to say, his competitive spirit emerged early. After losing his first tournament match at age nine, instead of being discouraged, he immediately asked his parents to enter him into another competition the following week.
Career Highlights and Wins
Fonesca’s breakthrough came in 2023 when he captured the US Open junior title, marking him as a rising star. But it was in 2024 that truly announced his arrival on the professional stage.
At the Lexington Challenger, he made history as the youngest Brazilian champion since the tour’s inception in 1978. He won the title at the same age Jannik Sinner did five years earlier.

His victory came without dropping a set, which goes to show his technical prowess. Starting 2024 ranked 730th, Fonseca’s rise has seen him soar into the Top 80.
Currently, he’s the youngest player in the Top 200 and Brazil’s No. 3 player. Standing 6’1″ and playing right-handed with a two-handed backhand, he’s known for his powerful inside-in forehand.
Personal Life
Working with coach Guilherme Teixeira, whom he considers a second father, Fonseca has a strict social media protocol during tournaments. The young player limits himself to WhatsApp for essential communication with family and team members.

Despite comparisons to Brazilian legend Gustavo Kuerten and being nicknamed ‘Little Sinner‘, Fonseca remains grounded, focused simply on “trying to be João.”
