2000: Erica Mena Meets Raul Conde
King Conde’s mom, Erica Mena, is now an actress and a reality TV star. But back then, she started her career by appearing in hip-hop music videos.
One of those videos was Lean Back by the Terror Squad. As it happens, the late Raul Conde was the set director. That’s how the two met and started what would later be described as a toxic on-and-off relationship.
2006: Pregnancy Comes as Surprise to Erica Mena
In an interview with Carlos King, Mena revealed a LOT of details about her pregnancy and experience as a teen mom.
First, she didn’t even know she was pregnant until she had crossed the six-month mark! So, you can imagine the sort of shock the young model felt. Mind you, Mena was only 18 at the time.
Plus, the LHHNY star didn’t want kids because she saw how her sisters (who also had kids at a young age) struggled. It took the model a while to feel “okay” with being pregnant. Still, she did her best to hide her pregnancy.
However, things quickly changed once King Javien Conde was born.

By the time King was born, Erica Mena was 19. As young as she was, she still wanted to provide the best life for her kid. She felt like King “set the tone” for her hustle moving forward.

King Conde didn’t get to see his parents as a couple. After all, Erica Mena and Raul Conde separated in 2007.
It wasn’t exactly a friendly break-up, though. Erica claims that Raul was abusive toward her and that she had to fight back. But apparently, the couple worked on resolving their issues for the sake of their son and co-parented King cordially up until Raul’s death.
2019: Erica Gets Married (With King’s Blessing)
King’s mom started dating the rapper Safaree Samuels in 2018. Things seem to be going well for a while—so well that Safaree asked King and Erica’s mom for permission before proposing.
TMZ reports that King Javien and his grandma gave the rapper their blessings. Soon, we saw the public proposal and the extravagant wedding the King attended!
However, this relationship didn’t last long. Erica Mena and Safaree Samuels ended up divorcing in 2021. The two have been battling A media battle, but I’ll get to the rumors in a minute!

Unfortunately, Raul Conde passed away from a heart attack in November 2023. The director/rapper was only 52.

Check out any Instagram post of Erica and her two younger kids, Safire and Legend. Oddly, you’ll find at least one person commenting about how “unfair” it is that she doesn’t post pics of King as much.
However, Mena keeps stating that this is all based on King’s request. Her boy prefers to stay out of the limelight, and she’s trying to respect that as much as possible.
“He Doesn’t Like You” Rumors
Some people go as far as claiming that King Javien doesn’t even like his mom.
Perhaps you’ll remember Erica’s beef with her LHH castmate, Spice. While the two were hashing things out, Spice told Mena that her 16-year-old son (referring to King) hates her.
Those words stung because Mena flipped the table and insulted Spice so severely that she was fired from the TV franchise. Yes, this argument cost Mena her job!
I’d also like to point out that Spice wasn’t the only person who made this claim about King and Mena’s relationship. Mena’s ex-husband, Safaree, recently said the young boy doesn’t want to live with his mother.
That was during a nearly 30-minute-long “Storytime” YouTube video of Safaree venting about how every interaction he has with Erica Mena is full of tension. He also claims that Mena’s family is going after her for family support because she’s not helping enough with King.
