Early Life
Mike Tirico was born on December 13, 1966, in Queens, New York City. His mother, Maria, is Italian American while his father, Donald, is African American.
Not much is known about Tirico’s childhood, only Tirico never really considered himself to be black. To him, he’s just an Italian kid who grew up in Queens.
In an interview with the New York Times, Tirico claimed that he isn’t particularly bothered when someone calls him black, but he makes sure to correct them. His parents split up when he was four, and he grew up on his mother’s side. As such, Tirico considers himself Italian American more than anything else.
Tirico graduated from Bayside High School before attending Syracuse University on a Robert Costas scholarship, making him the first person to receive the grant. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Broadcast Journalism in 1988.
While studying, Tirico worked as a sports director at WTVH, a sports company affiliated with CBS.
