Lone Survivor
The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10

by Marcus Luttrell w/ Patrick Robinson, Read by Kevin T. Collins

Marcus Luttrell is the sole survivor of a Navy SEAL team sent on a mission in terrorist-occupied Afghanistan . In listening to him describe the start of the mission I can't help but get a sense of foreshadowing. Luttrell mentions he and others noticed the lack of ground cover in their mountainous assignment, but did not mention it. And once on the ground, the rope they scaled was cut and dropped from the helicopter. Eventually, they are discovered by goat farmers and the trouble begins. Three of the men defend themselves to the death. Luttrell tells of their heroism and bravery till the end. One can't imagine how difficult it was to for him to witness this and keep in survival mode. Luttrell tells how he survived using the skills taught to him not only by Navy SEALS, but also by the 2 men who prepared him during his youth – his father and a former SEAL.

In his book, Luttrell tells his life story from where he born and raised to his time in the service and eventually as a Navy SEAL. He goes into detail about SEAL Hell Week and mentions it often when describing the mission gone wrong. Despite the mission and the loss, Luttrell doesn't waiver from his commitment to his country or his employer – the US government. In fact, he makes some personal points about the professional restraints put on his team because of the liberal press.

“Lone Survivor” is a colorful, affective memoir. It takes listeners over seas to witness first hand this team's story of courage. It's an emotionally listen. Expect it to tear at your heart (I cried). Luttrell is quite a professional. After hearing his life story I, too, believe his career as a SEAL was his destiny.

Kevin T. Collins narrates Hachette's audio version -- an impressive read of an extraordinary book. It should also be noted well-known author Patrick Robinson wrote“Lone Survivor” with Luttrell. Robinson is known for such fast-paced Military Thrillers as Barracuda 945 and Scimitar SL 2. Remember you headphones.
