Dr. Who must surely rank as one of the most successful and long-running
TV series of all time. It is regarded as a national treasure; a
part of British popular culture that is watched by all types of
people, including those who do not normally enjoy science fiction.
Here is a guide to the 2010 season and everything to do with it,
from those Telos people who do this sort of thing rather well.
Just think, this is the fifth series since the show came roaring
back in 2005, and the thirty-first since the beginning in the early
1960s. I like these books for the insight they give into popular
culture, and the figures that show what people really liked and
disliked about it that are often surprising. This is a fairly exhaustive
guide as it doesn't only give fairly in-depth analysis of each TV
episode, but it also has sections for a stage play, books (including
audio books and comic strips), computer games, the Dr. Who Confidential
TV series and more. There is the usual section on the build-up to
the series as it is cast, writers are found etc. which makes for
interesting background reading but the bulk of the book is all about
those TV episodes. Each one contains a cast list, synopsis of the
plot, quotes, production notes, press reaction and of course the
analysis. This makes for fascinating reading, getting inside the
heads of the writers and anybody else responsible for dreaming it
all up and finding out what worked, what didn't and why. A few years
on it will be more interesting still, giving a snapshot of the state
of the series, an important part of British TV and its viewers in
2010. There are other guides to TV series but I am always pretty
impressed with these.
