Angel’s Advocate
A Beaufort & Company Mystery, No. 2

by Mary Stanton

"Beaufort and Company’s mission is to save those unfortunate, abandoned by fate who came to them by fate..."

Attorney Bree has two offices. The earthly office inherited from her great uncle is on Bay Street. Her celestial office—found only by those from the other side—is 66 Angelus Street. Petru is her angelic paralegal, and Ron is her secretary. Her angelic dog, Sasha, rescued in the last mystery, is back and gets some added canine company.

In Angel’s Advocate, Aunt Cissy asks Bree to take a case as a favor. Lindsay, a seventeen-year-old cheerleader, assaults an eight-year-old girl scout and steals her cookie money. Lindsey’s reasoning? She needed a latte. Lindsey’s late father is Probert Chandler, the drug store king. Bree takes the case. Ron and Petru agree to help in a non-angelic way. Detective Hunter gets involved and prosecutor Cordy (Oprah lookalike) adds her two cents. Also back is Gabriel Striker, PI and nosy angel. He tends to appear when Bree is losing her cool.

Bree discovers her client Lindsey is spoiled and lacks empathy or conscience. Lindsay’s mother is just plain cold. While visiting them, Bree meets the late Probert Chandler, who needs a divine defense—Beaufort and Co has a client after all.

Bree’s parents put in an appearance when Bree goes home for Guy Fawkes Day. She meets Probert’s partner and it doesn’t go well. Her father reminds her to put personal judgment aside because she’s an advocate. Her hated ex-fiancé Payton is stirring up trouble, again. And an old love interest moves to Savannah. Bree’s mother and sister are concerned.

Bree and Ron visit the county courthouse housing the seventh circuit of celestial court to retrieve Probert’s case. There are various circles, the highest (9) being the most severe cases.  In the original case, they find the victim is "requesting a retrial on the basis of facts not in evidence." He is disputing the suicide charge.

When Bree and Sasha are also threatened by a couple who escaped their graves at the Angelus Street cemetery, Professor Armand mentions dogs of war. Needless to say, Bree is now housing three dogs in her condo. Will it be enough to protect Bree? Her mother and her great-uncle were victims of the other side. Can Bree save Probert from Hell and keep those she loves safe?

The Beaufort and Co series is imaginative and intelligent. It’s a legal mystery series with a paranormal twist. It’s the good against the bad, with angels standing guard and doing all the paperwork. It’s a hoot. Who knew one could file a complaint against a couple of dead people? Bree moves from normal to paranormal at a moment’s notice. It’s surreal. Highly recommended. This is the second in the series. Don’t miss the first (also reviewed on Myshelf); it explains Bree and why she was chosen.
