Cass
Donovan gave up her psychiatric practice to move to Bay Island,
where she opened a psychic shop, Mystical Musings, intent
on helping others. Although Cass believes she’s not
psychic in the traditional sense, she is intuitive and her
experience as a psychiatrist helps her “read”
people. Cass is strong and cares deeply about people. Yes,
she has periods of self-doubt, especially lately. She’s
been having recurrent dreams where she sees a woman’s
face and hears a plea for help.
After Artie Becker enters her shop and asks Cass to help find
his missing daughter, Kelly, Cass wonders if the woman of
her dreams and Kelly are the same. Cass later sees Artie leaving
a gallery and is stunned to see a portrait of the woman from
her dreams inside the shop. She walks inside and learns that
the gallery owner and artist, Leighton Mills, painted the
portrait.
Cass walks her dog Beast along the beach and he finds a bone,
then leads her to a body. Cass calls the police and, after
her two best friends, Stephanie Lawrence and Bee Maxwell arrive,
explains what happened. Bee accompanies Cass to the gallery
shop and, while Bee keeps Leighton busy discussing a possible
painting for his dress shop, Cass surreptitiously searches
for the portrait and finds it partially painted over. Why
would Leighton try to hide the portrait? What’s the
connection between Leighton and Artie? And could the body
on the beach be that of Artie’s missing daughter?
Clairvoyant and Present Danger possesses what I love
the most in a great cozy: characters that I care about and
miss when I’ve finished the last page, a promising romance,
and a story that blends the psychic realm and an intriguing
murder to provide an engrossing, fast paced plot that kept
me glued to the pages.
